Im Yoona, choding at heart;
They say never judge a book by its cover. Indeed, it’s true. By appearance she seems quite girly. However, beneath this exterior she’s a tomboy who imitates flounders, laughs like an alligator, and is known for her extraordinary strength. She specialises in ssanti dances, finding random chicken feet in the middle of the night, and breaking six chopsticks in one go. This is Im Choding. The face of Girls’ Generation. 

Im Yoona, the centre of Girls’ Generation;
There is this misconception about Yoona being the centre player. Being the centre of the group does not solely give her an advantage. In fact, with this position, it seems like Yoona was more at a disadvantage in some occasions. Although she is centre of popularity; at times, she was centre of the hurt. Centre of the criticism. Yet she’s a fighter; pushing through hardships and negativity with an unwavering perseverance and strength of mind. As the centre, this is how she protects her group. By always putting up a brave face.

Im Yoona, a walking perfection;
There are hundreds of words that can be used to describe her perfection. I’ve always thought I could list them all. But at that time, when she stood a metre or two away from me, I realised that such perfection was too beautiful for words. I’m sure some of you who have seen her in person, could relate. That moment of being utterly speechless in amazement.

A Homage To Lee Sunkyu.

Lee Sunkyu, the one who brings Sunshine;
To Lee Sunkyu, Sunny, isn’t merely a name for her. It became her character. Her foundation. Her name brings warmth and that warmth brings joy to the people around her.

Lee Sunkyu, small but strong as a mountain;
She once confessed of having so many handicaps that potentially could overwhelm her. Instead of dwelling in these discouragements, she persevered and conquered her insecurities. She’s a walking inspiration; proving that it’s only human nature to feel pressure, as at the same time, pressure is what makes diamonds.

Lee Sunkyu, the one who completes Girls’ Generation;
In Choi Sooyoung’s words, “Sunny is a pile of luck. She completes us. Girls’ Generation without Sunny is like a donut without the hole”. Being the last member to join, she’s indeed the one who completes the group. Think about it. Her inclusion brings completeness; closure to the definition; and unity to Girls’ Generation.

A Homage To Jessica Jung.

Jessica Jung, there is more than meets the eye;
She’s an aircon-lovin’, iPhone-lovin’, pout-lovin’, cucumber-hatin’ girl. She’s a walking model in the red carpet, but a sergeant-walking girl in normal days. Not your ordinary girl, is she? 

Jessica Jung, the warmest ice princess;
She’s the kind girl who seems cold at first glance, when in fact she’s the most emotional. She seems blank, but in reality her expressions can’t lie. Due to her cold front she seems strong, yet she’s the first to cry. Although she seems independent, she’s always the first to hold her member’s hands.

Jessica Jung, the heart of Girls’ Generation;
Before a flower is able to bloom in Springtime, they must go through the harshness of winter. When we look back at the journey that these nine girls have gone through, we can see how their blood, sweat and tears were able to carry them high throughout these years. Once a little girl who cried being in front of the camera, she grew beautifully to become a confident iconic figure. Seven years of continuous dedication, not a single lazy day. Through Jung Sooyeon’s unwavering zeal, world star Jessica Jung was born.

Understanding Kwon Yuri,
Behind The Smile, Behind The Tears. 

Although there are thousands, and even millions of words that exist in language itself, there isn’t one perfect word to truly encapsulate the uniqueness that is Kwon Yuri. This, in itself is what sets her apart from the rest. Overflowing with an abundance of charms, Girls’ Generation’s resident KkabYul is quintessentially known to be an energetic, happy-go-lucky girl; one who finds joy in the smallest things in life.

The priceless stories of Soshi’s prodigious prankster has somewhat become a legend through time.  Whether it’s tying all her members’ shoelaces together before running away, taping rubber cockroaches, hiding fake rats, or even pulling the infamous whoopee cushion prank to the ever-so-innocent maknae. These eccentricities justify that innocent side to her, that down-to-earth nature. In many ways, Yuri is a genuinely sincere person. She’s not the type of person who hides behind a façade as such; however, what you see with her is what you get. Her playful personality depicts that captivating sense of purity that surrounds her.

Beneath this child-natured exterior, Yuri is a fighter. One who pursues her dreams with diligence and persistence. Words cannot simply bring her down. When shaken, she does not budge. She remains focused, whilst always keeping a positive mindset and outlook in life. They can criticise her; yet this motivates her to be even greater. Even stronger.Simply put, Yuri is not a girl who settles being second best to anyone. 

Juggling a rigorous schedule everyday, it’s quite easy to be overwhelmed. Tired. Or run down. Like anyone else, surely there have been times when she felt handicapped, overloaded, and even defeated. However, Kwon Yuri knows herself better than anyone else. At times of weakness, she encourages herself. She prevails to defeat her vulnerabilities. She has an enormous amount of will power and strength of mind that pushes her through every obstacle that gets in her way. She tenaciously charges towards her goals, and with her teeth clenched she proves time after time that she possesses an enormous amount of professionalism far beyond her age. Her unwavering zeal is the backbone and the foundation that shapes her to be the admirable person that she is today.

Almost impeccable in every way, Yuri herself depicted her presence in the group as a tree. Scientifically, trees absorbs carbon dioxide, and emits oxygen. Symbolically, in times of struggle, Yuri stands in the middle and being the happy virus that she is, she emits joy to her members. In this analogy, joy represents oxygen, one of the vital components of a human’s life. Thus, this signifies Yuri’s existence as the oxygen that livens and strengthens the group, both in times of happiness or sadness.

Kwon Yuri is not a girl of many tears. But those rare moments when we do see her tears, it is truly momentous; as those tears are not tears of weakness, but tears of victory.

This is the true side of Kwon Yuri. Behind the smile; behind the tears.

Symbolism of Time in Time Machine.

There is a paradox in the concept of time in Girls’ Generation’s Time Machine. Even as all the clocks portray a different time throughout the video, ironically the differences in time is the constitutive factor that ties everything together. The first glimpse of time we see is depicted by the alarm clock, followed by a street clock, a mobile phone, a car clock, and finally a wall clock. Time itself is shown on different mediums, which represents the difference of context and seasons in which each character is currently in. Yet the common element that brings them together on the same page is time itself. Yes, the times on the clocks are distinctively different. However, the fact that time is a universal notion, juxtaposes the abstract state of disparity in each context. In this apparent contradiction, these characters, who belong to different stories and were set in different contexts, are united together by one common bond, time. Ultimately, time is not what sets us apart or what separates us, but it’s what connects us together.

A Homage To Kim Taeyeon.

Kim Taeyeon, leader by name, kid by appearance, ahjumma at heart;
She’s the kind of girl who likes eating cold-leftover food; who once left her phone in the fridge; who went up and down the lift whilst sleepwalking; who fills her bag with free snacks and jellies only to distribute them to her members. She’s also the leader of the world’s girl group; the very group that gallantly stand as the front-runner of Hallyu. 

Kim Taeyeon, the voice of Girls’ Generation;
Taeyeon does not merely represent the group as a main vocal, but she voices the true nature of Girls’ Generation. Here’s a girl who cried seeing staff eating on the floor minutes before they performed. Here’s a girl who gave out chocolates to her fans in the midst of a filming break. Here’s a girl who stood in the back and supported her members when they were crying, but cried herself when the curtains closes. She voices her character through actions. Actions that speak louder than words.

Kim Taeyeon, a leader of integrity;
Quite often, a leader’s legacy is reflected through the successes of their group, when they are on their peak. However, what truly defines a sound leader is their integrity. Their adherence. The ultimate measure of a leader is not where they stand in moments of comfort, but where they stand at times of trials and austerity. The mark of a true leader is encompassed through their perseverance, and their ability to shelter the group’s unity when shaken.

A Homage To Choi Sooyoung.

Choi Sooyoung, who breaks stereotypical boundaries;
She might be the tallest member, she might have the longest legs, but ironically she can’t run. Her name might be Sooyoung, but ironically she can’t swim. She might seem intimidating at first sight, but ironically she is most obedient. 

Choi Sooyoung, the glue that holds Girls’ Generation together;
Each nine member holds equal significance to Girls’ Generation as a whole. Sooyoung is the consoler, the “first member who the girls turn to when in doubt” (Yuri). The one who enlivens the group. She is also the voice of the group, who is entrusted with the group’s image with her every word. In times of uncertainty, she steps in and takes responsibility. 

Choi Sooyoung, who redefines what a true artist is;
She might be part of a history-changing group, but she approaches every day with a rookie mentality. She might be an influential icon, but she walks with a humble and grateful heart. What truly defines an artist is their character, their integrity; and Sooyoung is a testament of that.
